Has the autism diagnosis changed over time?

Yes.

  • DSM-III (1980) was the first to contain a description of Infantile Autism, later renamed Autistic Disorder in 1987.
  • DSM-IV (1994) added Asperger’s Disorder, PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified), and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, to Autistic Disorder.
  • DSM-5 (2013) combined all four conditions into Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), defining the previous disorders as various different presentation of the same underlying disorder.

Those diagnosed under one of the earlier versions of the DSM kept the diagnosis; they do not need to get a new diagnosis. Because of this, there are various diagnosis including Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome, PDD-NOS, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorder within the Autistic community, depending on when a person was diagnosed.
