How do you tell someone that you are autistic?

There is no set way to tell someone you are autistic. It really depends on (i) your relationship to that person – are they a family member, a friend, teacher, an employer, a work colleague, a romantic interest; and (ii) your reason(s) for wanting to tell them.

It is a good idea to prepare a brief, simple explanation of what autism is, in case the person you are telling is unfamiliar with autism or has some mistaken ideas about it.

If you are disclosing to someone in a professional capacity, such as a teacher or employer, you may consider getting an autism advocate to accompany you to help explain autism and how it impacts you specifically, and any relevant adjustments that would help you to be more successful.
