How does autism affect learning? Is autism a learning disability?

Unless an individual has a co-occurring condition of intellectual disability, or learning disability a person does not have a learning disability. Often, if an individual has a strong interest in a subject, they will excel in their ability to absorb and master the content.

However, since most learning occurs in schools, colleges, and universities, difficulties with social communication and social interaction, as well as sensory issues, may interfere with the process of learning. Also, many autistics tend to be concrete thinkers, and so can have difficulties with subjects that involve a lot of abstraction or flights of metaphysics.

The prevalence of a co-occurring learning disability or intellectual disability is higher within the Autistic community.
