What is autistic masking?

Autistic masking is an aspect of social camouflage where an autistic individual tries to fit in with their social situation, by hiding some of their autistic characteristics or mimics the behaviours of non-autistics around them. While many autistics do this sometimes, since it makes dealing with non-autistic society go smoother, it can become a problem when an autistic individual does this frequently.

Masking takes energy and trying to mask constantly is ultimately exhausting. It also involves denying one’s basic nature, which can lead to various problems —— mental, emotional, and physical.
